The Truth
I visited with a chronically ill relative over the weekend. We discussed how awkward it can be when someone asks how you are doing. The answer usually and automatically is I’m fine and is said with a smile.
If the truth be told the person asking would probably faint dead away. Most people don’t really want the truth as it would be extremely uncomfortable for them. The intention is honest and heartfelt but there is no preparation for an honest answer.
I commented that it must be exhausting to repeatedly inform people about what is really going on. But at the same time it can be cathartic to actually share about the disease that is plaguing our every moment of every day.
Personally, I only share with those that I know truly care to hear the truth with understanding and compassion. It can be a fine line making that decision in that conversation.
